Susan Alcorn
http://www.myspace.com/susanalcorn

is a Baltimore-based composer and musician who has received international recognition as an innovator of the pedal steel guitar, an instrument whose sound is commonly associated with country and western music. Alcorn has absorbed the technique of C&W pedal steel playing and refined it to a virtuosic level. Her original music reveals the influence of free jazz, avant-garde classical music, Indian ragas, Indigenous traditions, and other musics of the world. The Manchester Guardian describes her music as “beautiful, glassy and liquid, however far she strays from pulse and conventional harmony.”

Recent performances include the Musique Action festival in Nancy, France, Leipzig JazzTage in Germany as a part of the Chris Cutler Project, critically acclaimed performances at the London Musicians Collective’s Festival of Experimental Music, and performances at the High Zero Festival in Baltimore, Birmingham Improv Festival, and the No Idea Festival in Austin, Texas. Though she usually performs solo, she has collaborated and recorded with others including Pauline Oliveros, Eugene Chadbourne., the late Peter Kowald, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Maggie Nicols, LaDonna Smith, Joe Giardullo, Joe McPhee, Mike Cooper, Lê Quan Ninh, Ellen fullman, Caroline Kraabel, Johanna and Christofer Varner, and Scottish guitarist George Burt.

Her recent recordings Curandera (Uma Sounds), Concentration (Recorded) and And I Await the Resurrection of the Pedal Steel Guitar (Olde English Spelling Bee) are available in Europe and the United States. Ms. Alcorn currently resides in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
